First - RESEARCH: consumers spend an average of 18-19 hours researching online before even contacting a dealer.
Second - FACT FINDING: after you find the vehicle you want you contact the dealer or source you found the vehicle on such as dealers website, AutoTrader.com, Cars.com, Edmunds.com, Kbb.com and thousands of others. Then you either send a email request through the online forms, call in, or drive to the dealership.
If you have ever submitted your information on any third-party website in search for more information on a general vehicle, meaning, you did not find the exact vehicle you are wanting to buy in someone’s inventory, but know basically what you are looking for, (Year, Make, Model, Trim Level) your information is then farmed out. Every dealer with-in a certain radius of your zip code is going to receive your information or be sold to a participating dealer who has to pay for your lead in hopes to obtain you as a customer.
Now all the emails and phone calls start coming in. Calling you at all times of the day, emails filling your inbox saying the same thing. Most of which is not information you are looking for and are just pre designed emails with not personality or concern for you as a customer.
Third, DEALER SELECTION: you select a dealership or two that you consider you would like to do business with, only if the price is right and they have what you are looking for.
Fourth, NEGOTIATIONS - You researched pricing, rebates, incentives, read forums, etc. You consider yourself to be educated and have a leg up on dealers. The two or three dealers you contacted are now fighting for your business over price. Then you also want to know what you are going to get for your trade-in if you have one. So that is going to have big pull on who you decide to do business with as well.
Fifth, THE CHOICE - you chosen the dealer you are going to buy from. You visit the dealer and test drive the vehicle you are going to buy (if they have it). Next, they look at your trade, (if you have one) and now....
Sixth, THE NUMBERS - You sit down with your sales person and they present to you with all the numbers you spoke about via phone, email, fax, etc. They come out with different numbers than what was said. For some reason or another, they are never exactly what you spoke about. Either on the vehicle you selected, it has accessories, added options, and your trade...well you didn’t mention it looked like that. What ever that is!
So after working out the KINKS of your deal you move onto...
Seven, FINANCE - This is a long subject all on its own but we will keep it brief for now. Finance makes it’s money by securing a higher buy rate (APR). They may have you approved through a bank for lets say 4.9% but they show you 6.9%. They just made 2% off your loan. Selling extended warranties at a retail mark-up, gap insurance, protection packages, sprays, etc.
Even if you are a cash buyer, you still have to go in and go through the finance office and they still try and sell you all their products.
